Reiki means ‘universal life energy’ and is available to every living person. Reiki is a Japanese generic word which describes many types of healing and spiritual work and is not exclusive to the system of healing based on Dr Usui’s method.
The system of healing that has evolved from his experience is known as Usui Shiki Ryoho. It is possible that the origins of Reiki evolved from the Bon Tibetan Buddhist healing technique called the Medicine Buddha.
Reiki works by non-invasively transferring this healing energy through a laying on of hands. It is not necessary to remove any clothing for this treatment and indeed, the healing energy can be transferred without laying hands on the client’s body, if preferred. Reiki puts the body and mind into the kind of deep relaxation that revitalises the body’s cells to facilitate healing.
Life force energy enters us and flows through the body in natural energy channels called chakras, to nourish all of our organs and cells. When the flow is disrupted or blocked, it diminishes the life force energy entering that area of the body. Reiki re-establishes the flow through the blocked areas and recharges them with life force energy, bringing balance and harmony to both mind and body.
Reiki practitioners can tap into this energy source and allow it to go, where it is needed most.
There are no religious beliefs or dogma associated with the use of Reiki, although some practitioners prefer to offer it that way. It is simply the transference of an energy that offers opportunities for physical and emotional healing, continual personal growth and the unfolding of your own boundless potential.
